No Doctor Who exhibition worth its salt would be complete without them! So far, we’ve had at least five different Daleks displayed at the exhibitions, three of which have been built by myself. The first of these was constructed back in mid-1992 for an Art and Craft exhibition in my local village. Measurements were taken from a third issue Sevans model kit and scaled up accordingly. It took ages to find all the correct materials, but the end result was well worth it.
Construction was from wood, card, Kappa board, car filler and fibreglass. The ‘bumps’ on the skirt section were formed from halved plastic ball floats, pushed through holes and secured from inside by wooden battens.
This original Dalek has a one-piece skirt, which sits on a separate base. Subsequent Daleks have, for ease of storage and carrying, had their bases made in two sections which bolt together. The later Daleks also have plastic hemispheres instead of ball floats attached to the base sections. These are much neater than the floats and are exactly the same size as the BBC originals. All the Daleks have been painted using acrylic car spray paints and lacquers.
The Daleks have featured in a great deal of publicity. One, with myself inside, was used to launch a refurbished Police Box in the centre of Glasgow in May 1996, and they have been featured in numerous newspaper articles, as well as appearing on Scottish and Grampian television. The Daleks have also made several visits to local schools, much to the delight of the children!

Two Daleks — one the Dalek Supreme or ‘Black Dalek’ — built in the style of the Mark 3 version, as first seen in “The Chase” in 1965.
