Memorabilia

Almost from its very first days in the early Sixties, Doctor Who has proved to be a veritable gold mine for those interested in memorabilia. The initial fuel behind the now enormous merchandise machine associated with the programme was, of course, the Daleks, with much of the most wanted memorabilia from the 60s inspired by the creatures from Skaro. Even now, every month brings some new piece of merchandise, such as highly accurate talking Daleks, which may one day — if properly looked after — become a sought-after collectors’ item.

The displays seen at the exhibitions and on this website have all featured a wide collection of memorabilia, much of it donated by Colin Young (many thanks, Col!), whose extensive collection spans the entire history of the series’ spin-offs from the most basic Dalek playsuits right up to DVDs.

Colin is especially interested in any items from the 60s or related to the Daleks, especially those connected with the two Peter Cushing films. He also has a large collection of vintage Radio Times, including many of those with Doctor Who covers and articles. A selection of these can be seen in one of the photographs on this page. The photos featured here show a small part of the merchandise displayed at Kilmarnock’s Dick Institute and Forfar’s Meffan Museum. There is such a vast amount of Doctor Who memorabilia available that it would be easy to fill teens of similar cases and yet still leave just as much unseen. Such displays always generate a great deal of favourable comments from the public; they rekindle many childhood memories among adult visitors, fascinate the children, and are among the most popular parts of the exhibitions.
